Buffalo Skull Pendant (Sterling Silver or Gold)
The Story Behind the Buffalo Skull Pendant
I descend from Genízaro and Nuevomexicano roots from New Mexico and southern Colorado. My ancestors lived between cultures — Indigenous and Spanish — and relied on the land, animals, and plants of the Southwest for survival. Among these, the buffalo held a sacred place. For thousands of years, the buffalo sustained Indigenous peoples across the plains and mountain valleys, including those my ancestors traded with and occasionally hunted alongside. In the mid to late 1800s, the buffalo population declined drastically as the U.S. government and commercial hunters destroyed herds to undermine Indigenous food sources and force tribes onto reservations. This devastation spread beyond the northern plains and into the Southwest as well. The buffalo skull is a reminder of loss, survival, and resilience. Though the buffalo now exist in smaller numbers, they continue to symbolize perseverance and strength, just as our people do. I made this piece to honor that history and to remind us to respect animals and all life so that no species ever fades into extinction.
